Short Excerpts:

Marked Excerpt:

I noticed him the first moment he stepped into the diner, along with every other female both young and old. There was something about him that made it hard to look away. Maybe it was the smooth confidence in his stride, or his boy band good looks. Whatever the reason, I found it nearly impossible to not stare, even in the presence of my boyfriend.

His eyes shifted to mine and lingered long enough to make my heart flutter. There was something in their glint that struck me as lonely, but it was overshadowed by something else swirling beneath the surface of the rich honey color, something intriguing I couldn’t name.

Changed

Changed Excerpt:

An itch began to spread slowly from my bite mark and across my entire body. It never seemed to be satisfied, and I worried that if I continued to scratch it the way that I was, I might draw blood. My eyes flickered toward my bedroom window while I anxiously awaited Jace’s tapping. When was he going to be here? I didn’t want to change in my bedroom!

And then he was there—his smiling face filled with excitement, staring at me through the glass. I pushed the window open, but didn’t smile in return.

“Ready?” he asked, his amber eyes twinkling in my bedroom light as he removed the screen from my window.

I shook my head. “No, I’m not feeling so well.”

“You’ll be all right; it’ll go away shortly. Trust me, Tessa, come outside,” he whispered into the night, his gaze shifting toward the full moon.

Even though my legs were trembling beneath me, I still managed to climb out my window without falling on my face thanks to Jace. The cool night air gently swept across my skin, cooling my itch upon contact. Jace took my hand in his and slowly we began walking away from my house and out into my darkened backyard.

The Interview:

1. What is it about werewolves that makes us howl? Tell us what inspired the story line of Marked and Changed.

Werewolves are sexy! It’s something about all those toned abs and muscles that we love, in my opinion anyway! As for what inspired the story line for the Marked Duology I really can’t pinpoint it to any particular thing other than my daughter’s birthmark. It’s not a paw print or anything strange looking, just a simple little mark on her thigh about the size of a dime. I always knew I wanted to write a story about werewolves or something supernatural like that because it’s what I’ve always enjoyed reading. One lazy, sunny afternoon I allowed my imagination to run wild, one thing led to another in my mind and the Marked Duology was born!

2. Are there any authors that have particularly inspired you?

This is something that changes so often. I am an avid reader and with each book I enjoy, the list of inspirational authors grows. Here are a few that I really love though: Anne Rice, Annette Curtis Klause, Claudia Gray, Stephanie Meyer, L. J. Smith, and Jennifer Echols.

3. Writing YA is really rewarding. What is your favorite thing about the genre?

I love the intenseness of all the emotions, the unyielding belief in true love, and the impulsiveness that the characters can get away with in writing a young adult novel no matter which genre.

4. Do you have a playlist for the books?

I do! I think music can be a very important muse for writers. I actually did a guest post about the playlist for the novels for this tour. You can head over to http://whoopeeyoo.com to check it out!

5. What is the hardest scene you ever had to write and why?

Each novel of mine has its challenges, but if I’m just talking about the Marked Duology…I’d have to say the fight scene. It was something inevitable, but yet something I felt leery to write because I wasn’t sure I could pull it off. Readers seemed to have liked it well enough, though! At least I hope!

6. What are some of your favorite monster movies?

I can’t say that I watch a lot of monster movies, but I do enjoy a good scary movie at times, especially something with supernatural elements. One of my favorites to this day is The Lost Boys. It was that movie that first made me think vampires could be hot! If I’m talking about movies that truly scare me to the point of covering my eyes then I’d have to go with Steven Kings IT and anything having to do with creepy kids like Children of the Corn or even Poltergeist.

7. Panster or plot liner?

A mixture of both. I generally start with a bit of dialogue or a scene that randomly pops into my head and as I think more on it, more comes. I jot as much as I can down into a notebook. Sometimes I outline, sometimes I just go with it, but I always like to know how it ends close to the beginning of the project.

8. What are you working on now?

I’m currently toying with a few ideas I’ve had saved for quite a while now on my laptop. I don’t want to say too much here, not until I have something concrete down, but you haven’t seen the end of me just yet!

Overall:

These books were very well done. I loved the characters.  In Marked, Tessa is full of spirit. She is stuck in an old relationship with Sam and at the cusp of leaving for school. She is dreaming about werewolves and then you meet Jace, the handsome stranger. Great sub-plots, good interplay between the characters, fierce action and a great story line.

The second book, Changed picks up where Marked left off. (No spoilers here!!!) The plot does pick up and you get to see behind some of Jace's secrets. There is a strain on Rachel and Tessa's friendship-those dynamics always make my heart hurt and bring me deeper into the story. There is a bit of a rush at the end to wrap everything up, but all in all, I really liked the two books and would recommend them for anyone who loves a great werewolf story. The biggest thing was the voice of the book. When you grab me with that, you have me pretty much for keeps. The dialogue was right on and none of those weird speech patterns that make you stop and actually think about what you just read. Thumbs up. Great story with a HEA ending.

*Plot- fast paced
*Characters-likeable and real
*Dialogue-seamless
*Action-spot on
*Hunky guys (double check this one!!)
*Duology-like one giant happy read.

4.5/5
